Unbelievable: Mike Huckabee Calls For Release Of American Traitor Jonathan Pollard

By Gary P Jackson

This is simply unbelievable. Mike Huckabee, while on a trip to Israel, suggests we free a traitor to the United States, Jonathan Pollard, as a show of “friendship” towards Israel.

From the Case Against Jonathan Pollard by Seymour Hersch, which originally appeared in  New York Magazine on January 18, 1999:

In the last decade, Jonathan Pollard, the American Navy employee who spied for Israel in the mid-nineteen-eighties and is now serving a life sentence, has become a cause celebre in Israel and among Jewish groups in the United States. The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, a consortium of fifty-five groups, has publicly called for Pollard’s release, arguing, in essence, that his crimes did not amount to high treason against the United States, because Israel was then and remains a close ally. Many of the leading religious organizations have also called for an end to Pollard’s imprisonment, among them the Reform Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Orthodox Union.

Let me get this straight. Jonathan Pollard, someone who betrayed his country, and gave classified information to a foreign nation, should be let go? This man committed high treason. The penalty is supposed to be death. He’s quite lucky he only got life in prison.

According to prosecutors in the case, Pollard made more than $540,000 selling those secrets. And the secrets he passed along were so sensitive that portions of the trial were classified and not made available to the general public. And on top of it all, many of those secrets ended up in the hands of our enemy, the Soviet Union.

There a whole lot more to the story. If you want to read a definitive and well-sourced account of the Pollard case can read more here.

Suffice it to say this guy is a traitor, and should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Thirty-nine (39) Members of Congress have signed a letter requesting clemency (Curiously, they are all Democrats.)

What in the world is Huckabee thinking? I know he thinks he has a shot at the presidency. Does he think pandering like this, and siding with democrats, in a foreign land, will win him votes? With who exactly?

You’d think Huckabee would have learned from the last time he let a dangerous man go free. There are four dead cops as the result of Huckabee’s last “gesture.”

Huckabee is dangerous, and a fool. Criminals are placed in prisons for a reason. Sadly, it seems Huckabee never met a criminal, or a traitor he didn’t want to set free.

I think Huckabee has a good heart, but I certainly don’t want him running anything except his tv show. He is not Presidental material and I think he would most likely be as bad as Obambi, except that, at least, he is an American citizen. No, Huckabee has already proved his intuition is not up to par and his suggestions on prisoner release is a total failure!

I have truly mixed feelings – and many questions – about this case, but the fact remains that Pollard did give away classified US secrets to Israel. But what could they have contained? What were their contents that presented such a dire threat and were so dangerous in their revelation? And why & how did they end up with the Soviets? Hadn’t the FSU dissolved BEFORE the spy did his dirty work (unless his treason was committed prior to 1991)?

And another question: Seymour Hersh is no Conservative, but he seems to be arguing AGAINST Pollard? (or am I misreading the title of his NY Magazine title?)

Yes, I’ve read about all the Jewish organizations that have rallied to his defences in the past decade – and that’s probably the impetus for Huckabee’s unnecessarily provocative position. And I think I read where he’s traveling with Jon Voight in Israel (who, BTW, is VERY “tight” with certain very conservative elements in the American Jewish Community – i.e., those that are backing the release of Pollard), and I guess Huckabee hopes to capture more of the Jewish vote than he did the last time out. He might also be trying to pre-empt Palin, who, of course, is being VERY careful about not throwing in with the wrong elements in Israel, but is openly and ostensibly sticking by Israel’s leadership, who, I don’t believe, are the ones behind the “Free Pollard” movement – they’re too busy dealing with the more dangerous “Crazy Obama Regime” movement instead!!

Pollard spied in the 1980s, when the Soviets were still rockin’ and rollin’. He may not have intended for them to get the info, but they did.

Huckabee is a weasel. If Israel was saying “fry Pollard” he’d be for that too.

Yeah I’m sure he’s pandering for the Jewish vote. You know he’s booked a cruise to Alaska as well.

Thanks, Gary, for the heads-up re the time-line of Pollard’s spying activities (the 1980s) – which MAY explain (obliquely, of course) how/why some of those secrets ended up with the Soviets. That was a very ACTIVE period for the so-called “Refusniks” (the Jews -and others – who were clamboring for exit from the FSU and, most particularly, visas to Israel). That whole movement was the impetus for the huge migration out of USSR to Israel – and, undoubtedly, there was MUCH communication – incl. trafficking in and exchanging of vital info – behind the scenes between the governments of the USSR and Israel (who have ALWAYS had diplomatic lines open through all sorts of political upheavels and intense name-calling sessions, etc.), in order to release as many Soviet Jews as possible. And maybe Israel deemed some of the info from Pollard even more useful as a means of exchange to hasten that emigration than keeping it OUT of the hands of the Soviets. Who knows? I’m sure that Israel – albeit a good friend and strong ally of the USA – held the freeing of thousands of Soviet Jews in higher priority than secretly releasing sensitive US docs to the Soviets. Just guessin’, of course…

I have no idea how it ended up there, and really don’t want to blame Israel. I blame Pollard. He spied on his country, committed treason for money.

He’s no better than Bradley Manning, who gave all the info to Wikileaks.

        It’s a sad chapter.

What got me was Huckabee’s obvious pandering. Wanting to release him to show “friendship.” Heck, the best way to show friendship toward Israel is making sure they don’t get blown up by radical Islam! We’ll have to defeat Obama in 2012 to insure this.

      Dear Joy,

You said: “Thanks, Gary, for the heads-up re the time-line of Pollard’s spying activities (the 1980s) – which MAY explain (obliquely, of course) how/why some of those secrets ended up with the Soviets.”

Please see what FORMER U.S. DEPUTY DEFENSE SECRETARY LAWRENCE KORB wrote in his article in the latimes:

“Weinberger’s contention has been debunked. Information that Pollard gave to Israel did not make its way to the USSR. Instead, the information that the Soviets received during the 18 months Pollard was spying for Israel most likely came from Ames and Robert Hanssen, a onetime FBI agent who spied for the USSR and Russia from 1979 to 2001.

      R. James Woolsey, the CIA director from 1993 to 1995, stated after examining the Pollard case file that none of Pollard’s information went to the Soviet Union. Moreover, Woolsey now believes that Pollard has served long enough and should be released. And in a 2004 interview, Weinberger himself admitted that in retrospect, the Pollard matter was comparatively minor. In fact, he does not even mention it in his memoirs.”

      See here:

That’s why so many important ppl (reps and dems) call to free him.

Thanks for the update. HOWEVER, the man is a traitor to his nation. He spied on America and broke his oath to defend the nation. He deserves nothing from this nation.

  3. KingShamus

Huckabee is a perfect talk show host.

The boner he has for Pollard reveals just how much of a softie Huckabee is on crime. That means he’s no good to the GOP or America.

  4. Joy

Well stated, Gary, re the best way to show “friendship” (and NOT “pandering!”) to Israel is to stick by them and strategize with them to prevent (enshallah!) Armeggedon!

  5. Jim

Never release this traitor. He needs to be executed for his crimes.

    • Jim

      You have the right name.
But you are not saying the right thing..

He did his time. And his life sentence is a result of a mistake!

      • Gary P

Yeah because traitors to the nation deserve a break. he got his, the government didn’t seek the death penalty.

You will probably ban me for this comment. Redstate already has.

I happen to disagree on Pollard. I don’t care to rehash all the facts and arguments. It seems to me that principled conservatives can disagree on this. I am a huge supporter of Palin. I don’t know if she has taken a position on releasing Pollard. It is not an important enough issue to change my support. She is as pro-Israel as any politician I know of and has nothing to prove on that subject.
After posting more than 100 times on Redstate, I was summarily banned by one of Erick’s designated bullies (streiff) for disagreeing on Pollard. Repeated messages to Erickson, Streiff, Moe Lane, and others went unanswered. Is there no courtesy in the conservative movement? I expect none from liberals.
I get the distinct impression that many conservatives prefer their own version of ideological purity to saving our nation from the left. Would you rather execute pollard or save a few babies who are earmarked for destruction. A no-brainer for me, I’d rather keep him locked up than see another baby killed.
The self-satisfied arrogance that is starting to show up on the right is starting to disturb independents. I’d hate to think that they would consider Obama the lesser of two evils in 2012.
I will never support any group or politician whom wants to deny me my right to speak up on any issue. If you think that “owning” a website, makes it ok to do so, I am very sorry.
There is no upside to making the Pollard case an issue. RINOs come in all flavors and to me, that is one of them.

    • Gary P

Red State has it’s own agenda. What I have no idea, but if you ain’t part of their clique, well, you don’t matter. I refuse to take em seriously.

My problem with Huckabee is he is a pandering a-hole. The only reason he brought this up is because he thought he’d win some brownie points. Past that, he has a record of pardoning bad guys who move on to commit more and worse crimes. The last kid he let out killed 4 cops.

Pollard committed treason. He got his leniency when they spared his life. That’s good enough.

As for Palin, I doubt the guy is on her radar. Again, the only reason it got brought up was because Huckabee was pandering.

Why is this traitor still alive?
