By Gary P Jackson
Timothy P. Carney of the Washington Examiner pointed this out on Wednesday night after the Republican debate:
Governor Perry, by executive order, required all girls to get vaccinated against HPV, or get . He got beat up for that in the debate a bit earlier. A lot of the discussion involved parental rights. I wanted to emphasize two points.
1) It looks like a dirty example of crony capitalism and the revolving door. Perry’s former chief of staff, Mike Toomey, was a lobbyist for Merck, the manufacturer of that vaccine. Merck pushed hard for the mandate and stood to profit from it.
2) Mandating an HPV vaccine is not like mandating a mumps vaccine. As Michelle Malkin pointed out, most vaccine mandates involve protecting other people’s kids from communicable diseases that can be spread in the classroom. HPV cannot be spread in any normal classroom spreading.
Carney gets the ball rolling exposing just one of the many pay-for-play deals Rick Perry has going in Texas.
Mike Toomey, Perry’s former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Merck. Toomey’s mother-in-law Diane White-Delisi, a former Texas State Representative [mine, in fact] is now state director for Women in Government, another group that gets money from Merck. In fact, Women in Government has been called “Merck’s Trojon Horse” [something well be exploring further in an upcoming article]
Keeping it all in the family, White-Delisi’s daughter-in-law Deirdra Delisi was appointed to the Texas Transportation Commission by Governor Perry.
It gets even more interesting as Diane and Ted Delisi own Delisi Communications, a firm that lobby’s for ReachOut HealthCare America among others.
If anyone wants to put in a bit of time and check out the Web of Influence surrounding Rick Perry they’ll find he has plenty of ties to lobbyists and plenty of opportunities for his brand of pay-for-play.
From KBTX.com:
Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass laws in state legislatures across the country mandating it Gardasil vaccine for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country.
Details of the order were not immediately available, but the governor’s office confirmed to The Associated Press that he was signing the order and he would comment Friday afternoon.
Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company’s three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, his former chief of staff. His current chief of staff’s mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Rep. Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government.
Toomey was expected to be able to woo conservative legislators concerned about the requirement stepping on parent’s rights and about signaling tacit approval of sexual activity to young girls. Delisi, as head of the House public health committee, which likely would have considered legislation filed by a Democratic member, also would have helped ease conservative opposition.
Perry also received $6,000 from Merck’s political action committee during his re-election campaign.
It wasn’t immediately clear how long the order would last and whether the legislation was still necessary. However it could have been difficult to muster support from lawmakers who champion abstinence education and parents’ rights.
[ …. ]
Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit stating that he or she objected to the vaccine for religious or philosophical reasons.
Even with such provisions, however, conservative groups say mandates take away parents’ rights to be the primary medical decision maker for their children.
Read more here.
The so called “opt-out” wasn’t going to be an easy thing, and why should parents be forced to go through the hassle? And as Carney points out, this isn’t like requiring kids to be vaccinated for smallpox or the measles. You can’t catch cancer.
This was a huge over-reach of government. Perry meddling in the business of Texas parents. Though Perry cries that he was only doing it “for the children” [a typical liberal excuse] all evidence points to Perry doing it for the money.
America doesn’t have time for the sort of politician that Rick Perry is. We have enough corruption in Washington already. No need to import any more in from Texas.
We can do better than Rick Perry. We MUST do better than Rick Perry.
You twist the facts, madam. I also like Palin, but lying to get her elected isn’t necessary. The opt-out factor was just fine, but your minimizing it isn’t.
Don’t look so partisan………..would make your views easier to swallow.
No facts were twisted. Facts can’t be twisted. As a Texan I can tell you we’ve been on the front lines fighting Rick Perry and his big government, crony capitalist ways for years.
Rick Perry may very well be the most corrupt governor in the United States. He’s damned sure for sale.
As for Sarah Palin, Rick Perry is the sort of corrupt bastard she ran clean out of office in Alaska. Many went to prison.
Maybe instead of complaining, you should spend time learning how Rick Perry is. How corrupt he is. What his real record is.
Guess again.
I lived in Texas, too, for the past 30+ years. I’ve lived through LBJ and Ann Richards. And, your comments are just wrong. Name-calling doesn’t help a bit.
Unlike you, I’m a fan of both. I also support Palin, but don’t think she can be elected because of the work of the MSM, much like you are doing against Perry..
I’m a native Texan. And there was no name calling involved in my response.
Rick Perry is corrupt. What more can I say?
One thing I’ve noticed about Perry supporters. They treat any mention of his actual record as a hate crime, or act of treason. Never seen anything like it.
BTW, just who do you think Sarah Palin is talking about when she refers to “crony capitalism in both parties”? She’s talking about Rick Perry, the best governor money can buy.
There’s a whole lot more to come out about Perry. We’ve already exposed the $500,000 he took from AT&T to shill for their merger with T-Mobile. There’s a lot more.
Unlike Perry, everything the media has said about Sarah Palin was a lie. The reporting on Perry is absolute fact verified by many sources.
Perry is unelectable. Sarah Palin is ineluctable.
I have read and researched quite a bit on this subject, and have discovered some holes in this report about Perry on Counter Contempt. by David Stein, which needs to be read as well.
I don’t know if this will be posted, but if fairness is the game here, it will be.
No holes. Just fact. That’s how we roll.
Isn’t calling someone “a bastard” name calling? Holy Cow! My Sunday School teacher would disagree. Native Texan here, too.
Who is this “we”……….
Sir (madam), I didn’t mention the word “hate crime”….that is an overblown and emotional response to what I said. The same type of over reaching comments that I’m talking about.
I’m not just Perry supporter, I’m also supporting Palin (in case you missed that) and the other conservatives on the ticket and have defended them all against spurious claims, as well.
I’ve already read the stuff about ATT & Perry. No news there.
And, agree with Sturgeon………yes, there are holes in this story you all are putting out. I, in no way, think “Gary P” isn’t a part of this editorial team. Not a common poster at all. My comments still stand about the influences you, Pam G., are peddling.
Name calling and dirt-digging never helped a good candidate win. Why? Because good candidates don’t need that kind of help. This is the type of stuff that Palin had to live through and now you are pulling the same stunt to help her win??
Again, you make my point.
Perry supporters act like it’s some sort of crime to expose Perry’s ACTUAL RECORD.
If there were “holes” here you’d be pointing them out instead of ranting and raving.
This isn’t about Sarah Palin. This is about Rick Perry. Just because he’s been able to get re-elected by being the “lesser of two evils” candidate for years doesn’t mean it’s going to work on a national level.
If you think all of Rick Perry’s record isn’t going to be exposed, you are in for a shocker.
Again, back to Palin, none of the things said about her were true. The media were just making things up. She’s been very well vetted though. After the release of 24,000 e-mails, her record shows she’s as pure and honest as they come.
With Palin, the media made up things like her she faked her pregnancy, was having marital problems, and other bullshit.
Hell, Palin supporters were BEGGING people to talk about her actual record.
With Perry, that’s all we are doing here. No spin, no made up bullshit. Just FACTS that have been verified.
If you can’t handle the truth about Perry, I suggest you re-evaluate your support for the man. It’s his actual record.
We allowed Obama to get elected without being vetted. That is never going to happen again. Every candidate should be vetted as thoroughly as Palin. If they can’t pass muster, that’s their problem, and no one else’s.
This isn’t about “helping Palin win” it’s about telling America the truth about Perry. Palin doesn’t need “help” to win. Her record stands on it’s own.
Again, I suggest you check your emotion at the door and look at the facts.
BTW, the fact that you have no problem with Perry selling his influence as governor to AT&T for a half-million dollars tells everyone all they need to know about you.
One comment I’ve read about your recent activites on Perry:
“I am guessing that Ms. Geller is playing some kind of game, and that can unfortunately result in the re-election of Obama. It seems she is trying to split the party, and the possible unity that the Republicans need so desperately.”
Is this your true aim? This splitting of the party is something that i’ve been harping on for a few days now. So, are you a sellout?
Changing the subject from how corrupt Rick Perry is to Pamela Geller? Perfect.
How is exposing Rick Perry being a sell-out?
As far as splitting the party, I assume you mean the Republican party. You think I care about the Republican Party? I left it long ago. Both parties are full of corrupt bastards. Throwing them all out is what’s best for America. In fact, it’s essential.
If you wanna name-call, I suggest that choosing party over principle, and corrupt candidates is a sell-out.
We care about saving the Republic, not rearranging the deck chairs!
Face it, you back a flawed candidate. Period. Rick Perry is unelectable.
America wants to rid government of corruption.
Throw in all of the questionable land deals, and there ain’t a lot of difference between Perry and Obama.
Perry lost me when he tried to steal all the land for his Trans-Texas corridor. That was all about money too.
I suggest you reflect on why so many people oppose Rick Perry, including Texans. That would be a far better use of your time.
Rick Pery is a corrupt politician. He sells out to the high bidder.
Mr. Green, Mr. Jackson was not cussing at Gov. Perry. He was referring to the “Corrupt Old Bastard’s Club” (more commonly known as the CBC). That is a term used by the members of said club to refer to themselves. They were an entrenched group of polititcians and businessmen in Alaska who indulged in crony capitalism deals with the oil companies using the wealth of Alaska to line their own pockets. Governor Palin was instrumental in rooting them out. When a few of them went to prison, their influence was disrupted, and Alaska prospered.
I am not from Texas, but it is obvious that some of Gov. Perry’s past dealings are questionable enough that they should be investigated, and investigated soundly. We cannot afford another unvetted candidate for the highest office of our nation.
Mr.Sturgeon…It you would be good enough to post some of those ‘holes’, it might lead to a more provocative discussion of facts.
Yes, the “CBC” was something I learned about by watching the movie, The Undefeated. Since I am not from Alaska, I wouldn’t have known of that group of bozos unless I had lived in Alaska during that time, or had watched The Undefeated.
Granted, Gary does cuss a bit at times, but it’s his and his co-writers’ blog, I suppose he can cuss if he wants to! plus after all these years of dealing with rude people suffering from PDS, one might cut Gary a little slack. In this case, he was just talking about the “CBC”.
Thanks!
The “Corrupt Bastards Club” was a big deal. When some of the investigations first started, the group was sitting in the lounge of the hotel featured in the movie. Another patron, seeing them there, walked over to them and said: “You guys are nothing but a bunch of corrupt bastards!”
These guys thought that was some sort of badge of honor> They even had hats made up with “CBC” on them! That’s how corrupt and arrogant these losers were.
Geller or whoever won’t allow this to be posted, but an link to an article was given, but this site won’t allow it.
I’m sure this post will be denied as was my other one. Geller, you aren’t playing fair if you don’t allow the other side of the story to be told.
I suppose you are talking about Pamela Geller the best selling author and publisher of Atlas Shrugs?
Pamela doesn’t write for our website. So not sure what you are talking about.
I do know she has published a series of articles on Rick Perry and the Muslim curriculum that was being taught. Much of that was flushed down the memory hole by Team Perry. She managed to get copies of it and publish.
Pamela is a stand-up gal. She doesn’t do spin, she doesn’t do smear. If she publishes it, you can bet it’s true.
Perry is very close to several Islamists and refuses to comment on whether or not he thinks Sharia Law has a place in America.
We’ve not written about it, only because Perry has so many other issues that disqualify him from high office, and frankly, writing about Islam and terrorism is Pamela’s forte.
It’s funny, several Perry supporters have joined in the conversation, and yet, none of them care to address the crony capitalism that surrounds Perry. The institutionalized corruption that is killing Texas.
Sad.
Perry’s outrage over acceptng a mere $5000 bribe reminds me of a story about George Bernard Shaw that went roughly like this: Shaw asked a lady if she would have sex with him for a million dollars. She agreed. Then he said, “How about ten?”. She said, “What do you take me for?” He replied, “We have already established that. Now we are just haggling over price.”
According to NPR, Merck’s bribe was at least $28,000, something Perry did not at first admit.
There is more than a year to dig up more dirt on Perry. At this rate he will have to high tail it to Argentina.
I live in Texas and had no idea how corrupt Perry was. The more research we do, the more unbelievable things we find. It’s unreal.
