PPP: Sarah Palin Still More Popular Than Actual Candidates, Could Be Unity Choice at Brokered Convention

By Gary P Jackson

No surprise here. Sarah Palin has always had the highest favorablility among Republicans and Republican leaning independents. What’s interesting is Public Policy Polling actually reporting it!

Any time there is talk of a brokered convention, Sarah’s name is conspicuously absent, while Establishment™ types like Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, and Mitch Daniels are consistently bandied about. It’s funny to see the GOP Elite try and ignore the obvious …. that Sarah Palin is the only one who could unite the Republican Party and lead it to a resounding victory in November.

It’s interesting that, according to this poll, only 53% of the voters are committed to their particular candidate. Just another sign that a brokered convention might not net the results any of the current candidates hope for.

From PPP:

PPP’s newest national poll finds that Mitt Romney leads with 34% to 31% for Rick Santorum, 20% for Newt Gingrich, and 9% for Ron Paul. But if Gingrich dropped out Santorum would have a small lead with 41% to 40% for Romney and 11% for Paul.

46% of Republican primary voters actually do think it’s time for Gingrich to drop out, while 42% think he should continue on. 48% of his supporters would go to Santorum, while 33% would pick Romney. Gingrich dropping out being worth 4 points to Santorum is also what we found on our Illinois poll over the weekend- it would be a boost to Santorum, but not necessarily a game changing one.

A deeper look at the favorability numbers for the two front runners shows two campaigns headed in opposite direction. Romney’s net favorability of +19 (54/35) is up 18 points from our national poll in February, a sign of increasing acceptance with the GOP base. Santorum is actually more well liked than Romney with a net favorability of +29 (59/30). But his numbers are headed in the wrong direction, a 13 point drop from his lofty +42 (64/22) standing a month ago.

Romney has much more solid support than either Santorum or Gingrich. 61% of his supporters say they’ll definitely vote for him, compared to 48% of Santorum’s and 45% of Gingrich’s who express that sentiment. Among just voters whose minds are totally made up Romney’s lead expands to 12 points at 42-30. It’s a little remarkable that as long as this race has gone on, only 53% of voters say they’re firmly committed to a candidate right now.

The talk of a brokered convention never seems to die down and one interesting finding on this poll was that Sarah Palin is far more popular than any of the actual Republican candidates in the race. Her net favorability is +48, with 68% of voters rating her favorably to only 20% with a negative opinion. That compares favorably to +29 for Santorum, +19 for Romney, and -26 for Paul.

Palin is someone GOP delegates might be able to unify around in the case of a hopelessly deadlocked convention. She is seen positively by Gingrich voters (85/7), Santorum supporters (80/10), and Romney ones (57/27) alike. That’s a contrast to Romney who is disliked by both Santorum (38/48) and Gingrich (32/54) voters and Santorum who is disliked by Romney (38/48) voters and only seen narrowly favorably by Gingrich (46/42) backers.

One other side note after the Puerto Rico primary was in the spotlight over the weekend- only 22% of Republican primary voters support Puerto Rican statehood, while 49% are opposed to it and 29% have no opinion.

Full results here

No surprise that both Gingrich and Santorum voters think highly of Sarah Palin, it’s also no surprise that Romney supporters are less enthused, as she is a direct threat to their guy, IF a brokered convention came to be. And that’s a big if.

Both Santorum and Gingrich are admitting they have little or no chance of beating Mitt Romney in the primary process. Their focus has shifted to making sure Romney doesn’t get the 1144 delegates needed to cinch the nomination. That in itself is going to be a tough battle, as Mitt is already halfway there, with some big states and winner-take-all contests still to come.

That said, I’m one of those hoping for a brokered convention, as I’m not wild about any of these candidates, and getting less excited about them as time goes by.

I wish both Gingrich and Santorum luck in the efforts, but those two better be careful what they wish for. You can bet if Romney doesn’t win on the first ballot Sarah Palin’s name will be placed in nomination. If this happens, I think we all know what the result will be.

Sarah has also said she thought Congressman Allen West would make an awesome Vice President.

Palin/West 2012 has a nice ring to it, don’t ya think.

  1. Well, let’s be honest about something here:

The only way a Republican candidate can beat Obama after this three ring circus of a Primary is if they somehow convince the independent voters to swing towards a Republican candidate. I’m one such independent.

Now I don’t like Obama much. But I’m not voting for Sarah Palin. Ever. She turned off even some true Conservatives, like my father. He called her the “scariest” alternative the GOP has ever fielded. So much so that my father refused to vote in the 2008 election, even though he’s voted for 30 years for the Republican candidate in every Presidential election.

I think that’s the “Palin problem.” She’s not real to most independent voters who could give the GOP candidate a win over Obama.

    • Gary P Jackson

Thing is, Sarah Palin polls higher among independent voters than any one else, including Obama. We’ve been following legitimate polling now for 3 solid years.

If Sarah Palin is drafted, and becomes the Republican nominee, Obama and his crew might as well start packing, because they are finished. That’s been true since day one.

I don’t know what sort of fantasy world you live in, but reality is about to slap you right in the face.

mcclaud – You and your dad do not know Palin. All her negatives are based on lies. The truth is that she is a true constitutional conservative reformer. Research her history. The truth is on Sarah Palin’s side.

      • What lies do you assume I am relying on?

I’m relying on her public appearances and having met the woman in public. Her people had to scoot her along when I asked her about economics, because she had a sudden panicked look.

She’s not a contender. She’s a good celebrity, but that’s about it. She can drum up support for other candidates, but she is not candidate material. Not yet, anyway. Until she can do something without a coach to stand there behind her and direct her. She’s very lacking in many areas of knowledge.

Seriously, you are going to peddle that bullshit here?

For one thing, Sarah Palin was the best governor in the entire nation on fiscal issues:

Governor Palin–Leading the Fight on Debt and Liabilities

As for her being “scooted along” That’s total bullshit. NO ONE scoots Sarah Palin along. She is well known for standing and talking with her supporters for hours. All one has to do is go through Cspan archives of any speech she’s done they covered to see it for yourself.

Here’s an account of a typical Palin event. This was in Pella Iowa.

Not sure if I’d even bother to reply – esp. after Gary’s scathing put-down (which I hope encouraged McClaud to leave this pro-Palin site – we can read her type of “interpretation” on HuffPo and other anti-Palin sites!) – but I just wanted to make a couple comments.

First off, I’m curious about the EXACT question “on economics” that you posed to her as she was working the rope line to say about 10 words to each person who wanted to greet her and shake hands etc. Next, as to the “scooting along,” Palin sets the agenda – NOT her bodyguards or press aides, etc. UNLESS there’s a definite deadline and a plane to catch, etc. Also, if it’s on a particular arcane or unfamiliar topic (NOT just economics in general or Conservative economic policy in particular), she’s not about to launch into an in-depth discussion under the circumstances that you’ve described (working the rope line). Finally, if you saw “a panicked look” in her eyes, you should register with Pyschics Anonymous!

You do remember that for all his bluster and self-important lies, your avatar gets blown up in the end, when his nemesis changes the game on him? It was intentional self-effacing irony, right?

Palin/and who Palin picks has always been my first choice and secretly I was hoping for a Palin/West 2012 run. Hope the dream becomes reality but at this point seems like only a dream.

As far as Palin turning-off Mcclaud’s conservative Dad, I can only say I would have not even realized I was a conservative if it weren’t for Palin. It was on Sept. 3, 2008 when after years of voting for democrats I said to my republican hubby of 25 years “omg I’m a republican!”

Maybe Mcclaud’s dad is just scared to have a Mama grizzly lead.

    ————————————-
    Propaganda or Advertising? Fine line?
    ————————————-

Ronald Reagan was stupid, George W Bush is stupid, Sarah Palin is stupid

    Does this Sound familiar?

    (( Lather, rinse, repeat…Lather, rinse, repeat…Lather, rinse, repeat ))

It is the favorite “propaganda technique” favored by Liberal Democrats and their supporters that is used to attack their enemies:

ad hominem (personal attacks), ad nauseum (repeat attacks), name-calling (arouse prejudices and fear), Love Bombing (Milieu Control)

Socialist Democrat Orthodoxy ‘fears’ the popularity and support of Governor Sarah Palin to such an extent they have employed these propaganda techniques consistently for 4 straight years with the desire to ‘neutralize’ her. They continue, and escalate, the propaganda because it is not working.

(( The Cult of Personality )) a classic example is Barrack Obama

Watch the above clips..then think about what these Obama Voters said about Sarah Palin. Keep thinking.

What hits you right off the bat? (set aside the insults) THINK.

    (( EVERYONE KNEW HER INSTANTLY…without trying. 100% RECOGNITION ))

Products share the same principles about popularity as people: Does the product work as advertised? Is it available? Can I afford it?

Was Sarah and effective Governor, Mayor, Council Member, Chairwoman? Yes, to all of them. Was she availabe as a candidate? Yes again. Can we afford a Sarah Palin Presidency? YOU BETCHA!

The truth is….the threat is very real….Governor Sarah Palin would dismantle the burgeoning bureacracy that is their powerbase. Rino’s would receive no cover either, and would suffer equally as they and their crony and corrupt relations are exposed and defeated.

It is all about the money being dolled out in Washington, DC and who can or won’t keep the pumps flowing with dirty cash.

Sarah has proven she will not go along, to get along on corruption.

      Propaganda by Democrats: Very true.
      (1) When Bobby Kennedy was “campaigning” for Senator from New York State, Ken Keating. I knew those working on the Republican campaign. One of the “things” that the Dems put out was a story about Senator Keating’s wife. They said it was a bad marriage. In fact she/he maintained a residence in Bronxville. We felt it best not to reply to the comment.
      (2) Then, when there was a TV debate scheduled between Sen. Ken Keating and Bob Kennedy, Bobby’s people arrived at the studio early, then they locked the studio doors, and the red light was on, do not enter. The Senator arrived on time but was not allowed in. On the air it showed that Senator Keating was afraid to show up. That won the race for Bobby Kennedy. He may have looked like a choir boy but he was not.

The Kennedys are just horrible people. Liars, crooks, rapists, and murders. The best one of the bunch Joe Jr, died in WWII.

Maclaud seems to think that without the Independents weighing in – and weighing in heavily – in the General Election, the GOP is doomed. I’m of another mind: Without the base coming out in force and enthusiastically, the GOP ticket is DEFINITELY doomed! However, you know and I know and countless others know that Palin would be fantastic for this country; but the hate is so vile, ignorant, loud and, sadly, pervasive/persuasive against her (from a minority, but a vociferous one at that!), that I can’t imagine the GOP Establishment will let her name be put in nomination under any circumstances.

But what role WILL they have for her at the Convention – if she’s not an actual or potential candidate? If they don’t give her a major platform, they’re cruel and they’re fools; but if they do – and just like at CPAC – she’ll blow EVERYONE (candidates & all!) out of the water! But I’ll bet they’ll prop everyone BUT Sarah up in Tampa; and if they don’t show her ENORMOUS respect, even the thought of another term of Ovomit might not drag me to the polls. I’d rather see the GOP Establishment go down in flames than almost anything else. Frankly, only from the ashes of a total debaucle will a phoenix like Sarah Palin be able to rise up and FINALLY reshape the GOP into a truly Consevative Party, reinvented, renewed & re-invigorated!! That’s an Olympiad I’d pay dearly to experience!!

Palin reported that she voted for Gingrinch? Not, complaining, he, early on, was my first choice, until he was veted. Yes, Florida should acknowledge Palin.

    • Gary P Jackson

That was the only time in the five years I have closely followed Sarah Palin’s career I have been disappointed. I’ve followed Newt for decades. He is the worst.

Re: The Louisiana Primary coming up. I think that the specuation about a certain segment voting for Romney to give him the majority, is way off. Gary, you know Louisiana. Do you feel, as I do, that the non-white and also the white vote will go to Santorum? (Non whites are Catholic.)
From the replies also, they write, that they will not vote for Obama and are looking for an electable alternative.
From the comments I have read from Louisana, they say that “the South” does not go to Romney. They say that the northern part of Florida is considered south. If this is true, etch a sketch or no, the shift will be against Romney.

      • Gary P Jackson

Louisiana may indeed go for Santorum, but come November it’ll be anyone but Obama. Santorum’s latest gaffe may hurt him though. Who knows.

      • patricia cala

        Which gaff?

      • Joy

Enjoyed the back & forth between you & Patricia Cala -VERY interesting. But I think the “Etch-a-Sketch” business is already backfiring: Namely, I heard on the radio news today that the company that produces that product is very grateful to that idiot Romney supporter for the unexpected publicity! Plus, don’t think the Obama people won’t run with that quote, either…

I feel certain that Santorum won’t get the nod in a month of Sundays, and that Romney is already so weakened that it’ll be a miracle if, as the GOP nominee, he ecks out a victory in November. Besides, the media will aim all its rotten guns – Palin-style – at Dudley Do Good, and he’ll be super challenged to hold back the nasty, Leftist tide.

      • Gary P Jackson

Oh yeah, Etch-a-Sketch stock went through the roof!

It’s hilarious watching everyone walking around with those things!

I’ll tell ya though, it was a really dumb comment by Romney’s guy. It plays on all of the fears everyone already has about the human windsock. Something Romney does not need!

  7. Joy

I’d heard of lots of crap about the Kennedys, but that ploy by the Kennedy people (running against Keating in NY years ago) and the TV debate debacle is totally despicable. Well, Kennedy (Robert) got his, in the end, and we were spared another Kennedy presidency…. No tears for any of them. “He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword!”
