Governor Sarah Palin and husband, Todd, joined Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham, Greta Van Susteren and husband, John Coale, in greeting a new group of veterans to the “Operation Heal Our Patriots” ministry at a wilderness retreat in Port Alsworth, Alaska.  The ministry is dedicated to couples whoses spouses have been wounded in military combat or have had combat-related injuries after 9/11. The Palins arrived on Sunday with friends and famous racers, Parnelli Jones (1963 Indianapolis 500) and Walker “the Legend” Evans, (Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame), but this was the 12th out of the 15th week for couples to experience support and God’s presence through shared experiences.palins greet

Veterans enjoyed fishing off the Jay Hammond on Friday with Graham and Greta, on a boat named after the former governor of Alaska, celebrated the vow renewals of three couple who rededicatated themselves to marriage, and listened to a performanc by a formal opera singer and Iraqi veteran.

Our best wishes to the couples who are part of this great ministry. You have our prayers as well.  We appreciate the personal sacrifice that each one of you has made for this country.  For more information see

  1. I absolutely LOVE that truly blessed organization, Samaritan’s Purse! And by happy coincidence, I just rec’d a beautiful newsletter/solicitation for this very cause (“Operation Heal Our Patriots”) in today’s mail. Whenever I receive – and, of course, READ! – mail from Franklin Graham’s organization, I do so with great reverence and a positive desire to mkae a contribution of whatever size I can afford.

  2. P.S. What really touched me in today’s letter/solicitation was the often terribly detrimental damage that’s done to some marriages between a serviceman/woman and his/her spouse; so, when those 3 couples renewed their wedding vows – and some even were actually born again! – it really touched me and choked me up as I read the mail!

That’s awesome, Joy. You seem to have one of those special giving hearts that the blessed organization is filled with. There are so many unsung heroes in these events. It Is a special challenge for spouses, indeed, and takes special couples to endure the hardship together. God’s work is never easy. Can you imagine these physical problems being exacerbated by marital ones, too, for a vet coming home? They sacrifice not just the time they are deployed, but for the rest of their lives. It’s a challenge hard to fathom and I try to remember them when I complain about smaller things. They are so deserving of our honor and respect, like Sarah said. Our president couldnt care less about them and disparages all of it every chance he gets ; he just likes the photo-ops with them.

      • Thanks for the kind words, Isabel. I can just imagine how difficult it is for young couples, just developing their own personal relationship (including the marital/physical one) – and then THIS happens! But if at the core, there is LOVE; and if the answer to the question, “Can I live the rest of my life without this person?” is a resounding “NO!” then the marriage has a strong foundation on which to base future years of healing and growing closer together.

I have some wonderful pictures I want to add to the post in an update. You can see the where the couples stayed and their fishing experience. It is truly heartwarming to see the outpouring of love and attention they got. When they go home, they have to face reality again and you can only pray they will cope with this for as long as they are married. It is absolutely an awe-inspiring story. I went to the page just to get more of the “feeling” .. You know what I mean?

I would like info on making a donation in my husband’s memory to “Operation Heal our Patriots”. He was a U.S. Army vet and I know this would please him.

If you go to the Samaritan’s Purse website I think you can do that. God bless you and God bless your husband for his service.
