From Reuters:

MOSCOW, March 4 (Reuters) – Russia said it had successfully test-fired an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) on Tuesday, with tensions high over its seizure of control in the Crimea and its threat to send more forces to its neighbour Ukraine.

The Strategic Rocket Forces launched an RS-12M Topol missile from the southerly Astrakhan region near the Caspian Sea and the dummy warhead hit its target at a proving ground in Kazakhstan, the state-run news agency RIA cited Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov as saying.

This isn’t the first time Russia’s Vladimir Putin has violated an international treaty that bans the testing of ICBMs signed by by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987.

Putin Flexing Russia’s Nuclear Muscle: Multiple ICBM’s Launched, Bombers Scrambled

President Vladimir Putin took a leading role in the latest tests of Russia’s strategic nuclear arsenal, the most comprehensive since the 1991 Soviet collapse, the Kremlin said on Saturday.

The exercises, held mostly on Friday, featured prominently in news reports on state television which seemed aimed to show Russians and the world that Putin is the hands-on chief of a resurgent power.

Tests involving command systems and all three components of the nuclear “triad” – land and sea-launched long-range nuclear missiles and strategic bombers – were conducted “under the personal leadership of Vladimir Putin”, the Kremlin said.

An RS-12M Topol Intercontinental Ballistic Missile was launched from the Plesetsk site in northern Russia, and a submarine test-launched another ICBM from the Sea of Okhotsk, the Defence Ministry said. Long-range Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers fired four guided missiles that hit their targets on a testing range in the northwestern Komi region, it said.

Exercises of the strategic nuclear forces were conducted on such a scale for the first time in the modern history of Russia,” the Kremlin statement said.

If you remember, this was going on during the American presidential elections of 2012, and Mitt Romney was hammering Obama and rightly stating that Russia was the world’s biggest geopolitical threat. Obama with the aid of the corrupt media attacked and ridiculed Romney for this, and of course, gave little coverage to this flexing of muscle by Putin. It was media malpractice on an industrial scale.

In 2008 Russia fired a different model ICBM. From an article last month in Russia Beyond the Headlines:

The United States has informed its NATO allies of American concerns over a possible breach of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) by Moscow. According to the U.S. media, these concerns were triggered by Russian cruise missile tests. RBTH has asked prominent military expert Viktor Litovkin to explain the situation.

The INF Treaty bans the production, testing and deployment of intermediate-range (1,000-5,000 km) and shorter-range (500-1,000 km) ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles by the United States and Russia.

Judging from reports in the American press, Washington believes that Russia tested a “suspicious” missile in 2008. The U.S. media are not saying what the missile was – but they are dropping heavy hints that we’re talking about the RS-26, also known as the Rubezh and the Avangard.

The RS-26 Rubezh is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), meaning that it follows a ballistic trajectory to reach the target. Cruise missiles, on the other hand, fly horizontally just above the Earth’s surface, sticking closely to the surface topography. ICBMs have a range of up to 11,500 km, whereas cruise missiles, as a rule, have a much more limited range of up to 3,500 km.

The cause of the latest ruckus is that, in a certain sense, the warhead used with the Rubezh ICBM behaves as a cruise missile in its own right. After being launched from a mobile ground-based platform, the RS-26 climbs straight upwards.

Once it has reached a certain altitude, it starts to follow a curved ballistic trajectory towards the target. Then during the descending section of that trajectory, with only a few hundred miles left to the target, the warhead suddenly takes a dive, loses altitude, and continues the approach as a cruise missile, i.e. flying horizontally along the Earth’s surface. Detecting such a warhead by radars or other traditional means is impossible; neither can the warhead be intercepted.

This was written from the Russian perspective, and justifies Putin’s illegal actions by blaming it on planned American defense systems, but is worth reading for some perspective.

Russia to Deploy 22 New Ballistic Missiles in 2014

Russian ICBMs

This from November of last year:

SOCHI, November 27 (RIA Novosti) – Twenty-two land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles will next year be added to Russia’s nuclear arsenal, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

We intend to continue prioritizing the development of the main component of our strategic nuclear deterrent,” Putin said at a meeting on the development of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces.

Putin did not specify the type of new ICBMs to be deployed, but a source in the Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti on condition of anonymity that the missiles will be mobile and silo-based Yars ICBMs.

Yars is armed with the multiple-warhead RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile, which has considerably better combat and operational capabilities than the Topol-M (SS-27 Stalin).

Russia currently deploys an estimated 326 ICBMs with approximately 1,050 warheads, according to a June report by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

While Barack Obama has been throwing lavish parties with the Hollywood swells, between golf games, of course, Vladimir Putin has been readying for war.

All of this is taking place because Obama has signaled to the world he has absolutely no intention of being it’s leader. Governor Sarah Palin correctly predicted this would happen if Obama was elected. She’s correctly predicted numerous disasters Obama has created since being elected.

As Governor Palin said Monday night, anyone born with the common sense gene, saw this situation in the Ukraine coming.

Absent a strong and vibrant United States standing guard on the world stage there is a vacuum. A vacuum of power that will be filled by others. Right now Russia is filling that vacuum, but others, such as China, which has been building a massive navy and air force, will also step up to fill the void left by President Obama’s glaring incompetence.

I was born in 1959. I lived through the Cuba Missile Crisis, as well as much of the Cold War era. This world has never been in more peril, than it is today.

The cause of Liberty and Freedom is once again in decline, thanks to an incompetent liberal occupying our White House.

God help us all.
