Diomede, Alaska, Where Sarah Palin Can WALK to Russia

By Gary P Jackson

Of all of the stupid “legends” that have been created about Sarah Palin, the “ I can see Russia from my house” is by far the stupidest. In fact, she never said anything close to that. It was [alleged] comedian Tina Fey who uttered those words while playing “Sarah Palin” on Saturday Night Live.

Try telling that to a liberal, or even some in the GOP. They’ll swear on a stack of bibles that those were Sarah’s exact words. Never mind Russia is on the other end of the state from Wasilla, and there is a mountain or two in between. [or that Alaska is about the size of the entire western half of the continental United States]

What Sarah actually said in an interview, reminding people that Alaska was once part of Russia, is that you could, indeed see Russia from Alaska. She didn’t say it, but there are places that you can walk to Russia in short order, and during the summer months actual swim there. Don’t laugh, it’s been done!

Little Diomede Island is a very small island on the Bering sea. An extreme place to live where temperatures reach 50 degrees below zero, with 40 mph winds for added fun. In the winter, when the sea is frozen, and the skies are clear, you can indeed see Russia, and if you want to risk it, walk there. It’s a roughly 2.5 mile hike.

I bring this up, because I was watching a marathon of the show Alaska State Troopers on the National Geographic Channel, Sunday. This is one of about a dozen shows featuring and promoting Alaska that are made possible through legislation Governor Palin signed into law.

Anyhow, I couldn’t stop being tickled watching the segment of the troopers’ visit to the island, because of the continued references to Russia, and obviously being able to see it, right across the frozen sea. At one point, the trooper actually shows the audience the international date line.

Alaska is such a majestic beauty. The cold is more than I want, but I watch the show, and others featuring Alaska, just for the incredible scenery. No wonder Sarah isn’t keen to leave it.

I always marvel at the stupidity, or in the case of the media, the gross dishonesty, of those who have kept the lie going that Sarah said she could “see Russia from her house.” It was a cute little joke from a comedian, but you see it repeated as fact, to this day.

Oddly enough, when all of this nuttiness started in 2008, Nina Rastogi, writing for the far left Slate magazine, of all places, wrote a great article, with maps and everything, as well as an honest report of what Sarah actually said. I’ve pointed people to it all the time. It’s very much worth the read.

I know there is a lot more important things to be talking about, but I honestly never get tired of proving how silly liberals are, and how blindly some will follow anything that is said, without the least bit of intellectual curiosity to learn more.

Plus, the Alaska scenery is simply breathtaking.
