Why Does Michele Bachmann Want To Throw Military Veterans Under The Bus?

By Gary P Jackson

A round of Twitter conversations about Congresswoman Michele Bachmann yielded some incredibly troubling information concerning veterans and their benefits. It seems Bachmann submitted a budget plan that would cut billions from veterans earned benefits.

Now I know we are looking to save billions, if not trillions of dollars, and I am sure there are ways to cut money from every single government program, including the Veterans Administration, but to do it on the backs of our brave men and women who put their lives on the line for us, is totally unacceptable.

Bachmann’s plan would freeze health care spending on veterans and REDUCE benefits going to disabled veterans. Yes, REDUCE benefits to those fighting men, and women, wounded in battle, and forever disabled.

From the Air Force Times:

Bachmann plan would cut veterans benefits

Tea party favorite Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., has unveiled a plan for cutting $400 billion in federal spending that includes freezing Veterans Affairs Department health care spending and cutting veterans’ disability benefits.

Her proposed VA budget cuts would account for $4.5 billion of the savings included in the plan, posted on her official House of Representatives website.

Paul Sullivan, executive director of Veterans for Common Sense, said cutting veterans’ health care spending is an ill-advised move at a time when the number of veterans continues to grow as troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan. Sullivan said he finds it difficult to see how VA could freeze health care costs without hurting veterans.

It is really astonishing to see this,” he said.

The report goes on to say the Congresswoman issued a statement saying “her plan is intended for discussion purposes as an example of ways to cut federal spending to make it unnecessary to increase the current $14.3 trillion limit on the amount the U.S. government can borrow.

Read more here.

Look, $4.5 billion is not chump change, but when we are talking $14.3 trillion, it’s like a single grain of sand in the desert. With all of the waste, and questionable spending by the federal government, you’d think taking money away from our brave members of the military, who are sick and disabled, would be the LAST place one would look to cut spending, not one of the first.

We are fighting wars in three theaters, and military members are injured daily. Many will sadly become disabled as the results of their war injuries. These heroes volunteer to put their lives on the line daily for our Freedom and Liberty. They don’t do this for fame, glory, or money. They do it because they love the United States, and want to preserve the Republic and all it stands for. They deserve the first seat at the table, not the table scraps.

Not sure where Bachmann stands on this today, as her plan was released in January, but the fact she would even consider cutting benefits to wounded and disabled veterans, before exhausting every other way of cutting spending, is disgraceful.

Remember, this woman wants to be the Commander-in-Chief of America’s Armed Forces.

Great finding that devastating bit of info re Bachmann’s proposal federal budget cuts, Gary – thanks for posting!! That she would (1) even consider including such egregious cuts in the first place is troubling, to say the least; and, then, (2) not revisit her website & all it contains – and then yank that proposal and/or ID some other DOD costs instead – speaks to her tone-deafness and bad political instincts. Let’s see how/if she walks THIS one back, eh?

Bachmann is not who she pretends to be. That’s something I say with no joy. I hoped she’d be someone we could count on to help restore the republic. Sadly, she’s just another Ruling Class stooge.

Gary, a question. Does she really want to reduce spending in real terms, or merely cut the size of the next scheduled increase? It does make a difference. Thanks.

Doesn’t matter. We are fighting three wars now, and casualties are certain to increase.

Here’s the problem, with literally hundreds of billions of dollars worth of wasteful spending, why would you EVER look at reducing benefits to wounded and disabled veterans, before exhausting any and all other sources of savings?

I’m sure one could find REAL savings cuts in the Veterans Administration. Problem is, Bachmann wanted to actually CUT BENEFITS that wounded and disabled veterans are already receiving. That’s unconscionable.

As I wrote, these heroes deserve a seat at the first table, not table scraps. In other words, they should always be taken care of first. They sacrifice it all.

This happened in January. Bachman reversed herself in February. It is now June. I realize that Sarah is our pick. But. She has not announced. Bachman is my 2nd choice. I am sure that there is much about the Veteran’s Administration that needs overhaul. I’m a veteran. I will continue resisting going there. Vets serve for various reasons, the least of which is that they become dependant sheep in the welfare state we criticize.

So you think it’s OK that one of the FIRST things Bachmann looked to cut was disabled vets’ monthly checks? It should have been the very LAST thing any decent human being would look at.

The government wastes billions of dollars. Taking care of our heroes isn’t one of them.

Oh, and the only reason Bachmann “reversed herself” is because she caught hell from veterans. And rightly so.

I’m a Vet. I’m practically deaf. Screw the VA. It wasn’t that long ago that the VA had a less than a good reputation. If they need an overhaul, let’s do it. Same with the rest of the government. Just, what part of the government do you think does not need fixing? Medicare and Social Security are already sacrosanct. Witness when “W” tried to fix, or Rep Ryan dares to suggest. We don’t need to destroy candidates on our side. Nor,not allow them corrections, when they drift from our blueprint.

You sound like you have anger issues. I’m sorry you lost your hearing. That’s why I wouldn’t want a penny of the funds you deserve cut.

Again, if EVERY SINGLE PENNY of savings had already been wrung out of EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM other than veterans’ direct benefits, and things were still short, then we could talk.

Our heroes deserve to sit at the table, not fight for the scraps.

If the fact one of the first things Bachmann wanted to cut was disabled veterans’ pay is OK with you, fine. I can tell you it’s not OK with me.
